Evocava is a museum created to protect, enhance and promote the ancient Mazara quarries: a hidden heritage of two hundred thousand square meters divided into parks, galleries, caves and gardens, integrated into the current urban fabric.
Through a path that starts from an open-air quarry-park to reach a hypogeum, it will be possible to get to know the monumental Underground Cathedral, an early 19th century quarry of about three thousand square meters, recently discovered during the construction.
The pit was first a mine, then a ritual place, then an air-raid shelter and even a home. A treasure rich in signs and testimonies, a dense stratigraphy of meanings through which it is possible to read the evolution of the city through its most hidden traces.
The visit lasts about 30 minutes, during which the guide will tell stories, legends and characteristics of the quarries starting from the details still visible in the extraordinary tuff walls. Like scrolls of rock, from these traces it will be possible to read the extraction techniques adopted by the quarrymen, the methods of managing the construction site, even the ways to exorcise disasters through superstition. Between matter, light, shadows and secrets, the visit will make you see with new eyes the magic of tuff, a material that comes to us after millions of years through its wonderful fossils.
Depending on the choice, you can continue the experience with a picnic on the grass, immersed in the wonderful golden frames of the cultural park, or opt for an aperitif, lunch or dinner with a view of the quarry. All ingredients belong to Slow Food's sustainable production chain.
Evocava is a project developed by Periferica, an organization that promotes urban regeneration through processes that link communities and territories. Formed by a team of architects, designers and creatives, Periferica promotes the quarry system with a shared economy project based on sustainable cultural tourism.
